Great to see the photo. Andy - can you post a link to the web page where it came from originally?
Regular programme readers will know that I'm doing articles on the history of the ground throughout the season. I've done the Brookside stand already and also The Shed.
It's not been easy as the club holds no archive and my only source of reference is what was reported in the local newspapers or personal recollections, so it was really interesting - to me anyway - to read the above recollections!
I've got to do some digging to find out things such as when the changing rooms were built and similarly the old grandstand. If anyone has any knowledge of these sort of things please get in touch with me - jupugh@tiscali.co.uk
At the end of the season in hoping to be able to do some guided tours of the ground, maybe get a final chance to see some things like the old Brookside steps. Anyone else sad enough like me to be up for that sort of thing?

You could ask Colin if you can go up one of the floodlights! I would quite fancy it myself but I'm sure the health and safety police would have something to say!

Is there any evidence to show that there is no sustainable support for a football club in Worcester? What sort of number would make it sustainable? What does sustainable mean in the context of football where most clubs operate at a loss?

Some interesting comments from Dave in an interview on the South Wales Argus website.
Personally I would always be glad to congratulate someone on getting a new job, especially in the current climate. However it doesn't seem that the post was advertised and if I were a Newport fan I would be questioning the need for such an appointment as well as the selection process and the cost - which indeed some are.
They are passionate about their club just as we are about ours and Newport is another example of a club that has survived against the odds thanks to its fans. I hope those in power at the club therefore listen to what the fans have to say. I noted on comment on their message board along the lines of "welcome to the madhouse" so clearly its not all going to be plain sailing there.
Some of their fans are clearly aware already of the comments expressed here, I can't imagine they will be interested in all the ins and outs of the Nunnery Way saga but they can see for themselves that it has left a lot of loyal fans unhappy and a legacy that may yet result in our Club's eventual demise. They can't do anything to influence Dave's appointment but it sounds like it will be a demanding job with a lot of scrutiny.

Our friends at Gloucester City have had a few years to get used to groundsharing and I admire their fans for sticking by their club in difficult times and difficult circumstances. Ditto Evesham to a lesser degree.
The suggestion that our NYD game might get postponed because Cheltenham have a big FA Cup game coming up got me thinking about the realities of groundsharing and lessons we can learn.
We know our average home attendance will go down and that we will have to plan our travel to and from games.
Like Gloucester we will have to accept that we might only have two or three sides of the ground open at Aggborough - assuming that's where we will be - and things like bar, catering, club shop will all be different to what we are used to at the Lane.
The reality is that the host club will still call the shots, we will be subservient to them to some degree. That's just how it will be and to my mind you have to be prepared to compromise and make the best of it. The alternative is having no team to support at all. Of course it could still come to that but Gloucester have shown that with dedication and commitment ground sharing can work.

Cheltenham are playing Everton at home in the FA Cup third round. It's not until Monday 7 Jan but is live on ESPN and is sold out so I can't imagine they will want anything to jeopardise the game.
Bearing in mind it is raining again this morning in Worcester I wouldn't be at all surprised if our game gets called off. Verner - any time when the pitch inspection would be?

Credit to Gloucester and especially their keeper. He made five saves in the first half alone. We still lack conviction in front of goal though and I hope Glover gets to start soon.
Tigerroar - that piece on Colin Gordon was from me, thanks for your kind comments. Is the book on the history of GCFC still available? Send me a PM. Thanks.

I agree with all of the comments in support if what Carl and Matt have achieved. It is also true that we would struggle to find anyone who can do a better job, bearing in mind out current financial resources and uncertain future.
For me the aim this season is to finish in the play-off places. Realistically that means finishing fifth.
That is still achievable but let's also face up to the fact that we need to pick up in the league. We've not won at home in the league since mid September. We are struggling to score goals and we're conceding more than we were at the start of the season.
I think the latter is what needs addressing first and Carl tried that with two changes at the back yesterday. I would be happy to see us grind out a few 1-0 wins right now, just as Halifax did yesterday.
I thought the game was fairly even until the last fifteen minutes when they started to pull away. We did ok but I'd like to think we can do to others what Halifax did yesterday. However looking at our fixtures for the rest if the month it looks like this tough schedule is going to continue.
Carl and Matt have tried to freshen things up. They know what they're doing. If it came to a point where they run out ideas I would be worried but I don't think that's the case at all.

Yes, this is what I've been told too.
For those that don't know, Geoff was our Reserve Team manager in the nineties and noughties. A really nice guy, very knowledgeable and very loyal to WCFC.
His brother Gerald died suddenly from a heart attack some years ago, I recall.

Three home defeats in a row. Not good. Carl and Matt will be aware of our deficiencies, question is how we respond. I thought they contained TT really well and if he has a quiet game we struggle.

Danny McDonnell played for England in 2004. Was Jim Cumbes a better keeper for us? Obviously some of you think so but remember he was playing in an outstanding team and from my recollection only had one really good season.

Good players all, but Adam Wilde isn't City's only non league England international of course.
It would be great to find someone who can remember watching City in the twenties or thirties. There would have been some great players then but if course no longer in living memory.
Anyone out there who can recall some great players from the fifties - pre-Liverpool - in their dream team

There was some great time wasting by Brackley prior to the free kick that Deeney hit miles over. We were buzzing up to then and it took the wind out of our sails. But you could say that they played it just right and if we had done the same we wouldn't have complained.

Agreed TT is playing out if his skin right now. Can't imagine he can keep it up at that level all season long but he must be exceptionally fit. Best midfielder we've had since...well who knows when. Certainly we're not missing O'Connor now.
As for last night Brackley were well organised and very strong all round. We played well and matched them in many respects but couldn't finish again. They looked like a team capable of winning this league, we looked like a team capable of reaching the play-offs.

Maybe Simmo is going to be out for a few weeks then? After last week I was thinking Taylor might go out on loan but I'm only guessing. It's interesting but for all his ability Simmo has yet to find an ideal partner up front. In theory we have three decent goalscorers but no combination has proved successful to date.

I think Ealing's photo is on display in the Legends Bar.
Danny McDonnell is the best goalkeeper I've ever seen in a City shirt.
I suppose the benchmark is whether any of the players that have appeared for us over the last 30 years would have made it into Nobby's SL championship winning side.
Danny, John McGrath, Mark Shail, Steve Fergusson, Paul Moss would all be contenders.

You can't blame Taylor for the fact that none of his colleagues were able to put the ball in the net during the preceding 90 minutes, but...
He's a striker, most of his City career has been spent coming on as a sub and in the past he's been able to come off the bench and score.
He missed a sitter in a one on one at the end of the Weston replay. Sounds like he did exactly the same yesterday.
I don't understand why players don't tray and take the ball round the keeper in a one on one situation. Chances are you'll be able to score or win a penalty if not.
But having said that even if he had scored, we wouldn't have won the game, only drawn it.
My regret is that there won't be a last chance for a Monday night replay at the Lane, and not chance to take on a League club in the Cup at the Lane just one more time. Those opportunities have gone, it brings the end of our time at the Lane one step closer.
Oh and plus the fact we've lost out on the money for getting through to the next round.

Getting back to football, some of you will remember us going to Hampton and Richmond in 2000 and getting hammered 5-0. If you're brave enough you can find the highlights - or lowlights - on YouTube. I don't think that will happen tomorrow but it will be a close call. Bromley look like they're a decent side and Carl and Matt will be aware of that.
What impressed me in the last round was the real steel and determination in our performances in both games. Even if we go behind I do think our lads have it well within them to dig in and get back into the game.
I will be following the game on the radio tomorrow. Hope everyone travelling has a good day out. My prediction is another draw. Would be great to get another big Monday night crowd at the Lane!

Agree with all of the above apart from what Stalyvegas has to say. Mind you I think he came on here and talked out of his a**e last season too. Worth pointing out however that we created loads if chances and converted only one. With better finishing we would have won comfortably with ten men or eleven.

Not sure which sending off Sheffield thought was hilarious but in my view Reece's challenge was very silly and even if their keeper made a meal of things it merited a straight red card.
Let's be honest, if it had been one of their players on Matt Sargeant we would have thought it was a sending off. Will be interested to see if he starts on Monday.
All credit to the rest of the City team, we were down to ten men and 1-0 behind after 20 minutes, it didn't look promising at that point but they worked really hard to get something from the game.

I don't have an exact date but September 1951 sounds about right. The first floodlit football match at the Lane was in November 1951 and the lights were installed in October. My guess is that the cricket match was part fund raiser for the lights and part test run.
Any of you who have shown an interest in this can carry out your own research. All you need is a couple of free hours to go down to The Hive and have a look through the newspaper archive for 1951. It's free to do although you have to pay for copies. That's how I do most of my research. I've never looked into this cricket match before. If I get the chance I will but as I say, anyone can do it.

Our goalkeeper was our best player yesterday, which says it all really. Mind you there was nothing he could do about their first goal, brilliant strike. Harrogate deserved a point.
