Hi Ladies and Gentlemen, I have been in touch with Rob Bazley and Julian Pugh already but I was just wondering if any one had any aerial photos of St. Georges Lane? Failing that does anyone know who I could approach to gain access to the empty looking factory/offices on the otherside of the canal from where I might be able to take some photos of the ground? Cheers

Probably not exactly what you wanted but this web site has aerial photographs up to the 1950's from all over Britain. I did try to see if the Worcester ones included SGL but I had no luck but it was only a quick look. In any event they are all wide area shots. In Scotland the photographs have been used to identify a number of long lost grounds now under motorways, etc. www.britainfromabove.org.uk/asearch?search=worcester

The empty factories are all part of a development by St Modwen. I am sure they will help you out, local company and all that. The birds eye view on Bing Maps is very good.

You could ask Colin if you can go up one of the floodlights! I would quite fancy it myself but I'm sure the health and safety police would have something to say!

I volunteered to help Colin on the lights once, when I got down to the Lane, he'd gone! which was a shame. Ask him nicely and wear the correct safety gear, and I would think it would be ok.

Thank you for publishing the picture above, hope you don't mine me nicking a bit of space on this thread to reminisce but it's set off so many memories and all that's happening still hasn't quite sunk in yet. I can't bear the thought of the final game and won't go.
Anyway, when I was a lad in the sixties I had the very great pleasure of knowing Alastair Brack, our very talented Scottish right back who adored the club - and vice versa!
One day I took my Brownie box camera down to the Lane and there was Ally as usual doing things around the ground and I can still recall all of this 50 years later with no trouble at all, he asked was I going up to the top of a floodlight pylon to take a picture, to which the answer was definitely not as I wouldn't have got past the second rung on the ladder, and amazingly he took hold of the camera and I stood there open mouthed as he sprinted up the pylon (the one nearest the dressing room) right up to the top, and took the picture, then back down and I'm still standing there like an idiot. Quite incredible. Anyway I still have that black and white photo somewhere and I'm damned well going to find it.
Alastair never left Worcester as I recall and the last I heard of him, a couple of years back, was that he wasn't well.
And just before closing this, if you ever saw Ally play for City then you'll know that he was what Horace Winwood (Evening News late great cartoonist) correctly referred to as a 'textbook' player and usually showed Alastair in his sketches working the ball out of defence while reading a book and scratching his head saying in a speech bubble something like "now what comes next?"
Thanks Ally.

Thanks Ally. Thanks for the re-collection of Alastair Brack. he was before my time but I am researching the careers of the 60+ Scots who played for City and I would be very interested to hear any more re-collections - either as a PM or on the forum - of this fine player. I believe he was from Aberdeen and I think he had a footballing brother (cousin?)who played his football in Scotland.

Regarding the subject of photos of the lane I would recommend that someone who can take a decent photo(I am rubbish plus don't have any decent equipment)goes up Lansdowne Terrace and takes a photo of the ground under lights.Due to a long and boring set of circumstances, which I won't bother you all with, I ended up leaving the car there before a game just prior to Xmas and, on going to retrieve it after the game, was amazed at the wonderful view of the ground ,and the City in general, that is obtained from up there. The Lane looked really great lit up and it would be a good scene to have preserved. There may already be such pictures of course but, if there are , I have never come across them.

best and esiest way to post on here is to upload images to photobucket, and then copy the link shown for images on photobucket into a message, and there it is!

I will try and improve on the quality of these, but they are grainy efforts, and it was a typical dull day at SGL, the football I believe was described as "absolute bloody rubbish" by the learned folks on the Brookside, so City probably won 4-0!!!

It was lovely to read the story about Ali Brack. I'm his lad and he unfortunately passed away last week. This probably isn't the right forum for this so apologies. It's his funeral on 21st may at 12.15am Worc crem. Would love to see any of his worcester city friends. X

Very sad news about Ali Brack. He was a stalwart at City during the mid sixties and a real fans' favourite. He was a class act. Thanks Ali for some great memories.

I was saddened to hear the news of the passing of Ally Brack. He played just before my time watching City but I knew his name by reputation. His career is well documented in the City History. However, here are a few other pieces of information on one of my "City Scots". He played Junior football for Stonehaven near his native Aberdeen. Stonehaven play in royal blue and their nickname is “The Hive” so some Worcester connections there! Stonehaven did not pick up any honours during Ally time there but the club is still going strong and is playing in the North Superleague – the highest standard of Junior football and one of three regional leagues at that level.
I am 99% sure that another player - Donald Brack - is a brother or cousin of Ally. Both share the same middle name (Holland), hail from Aberdeen and Brack is not a common name in the North East of Scotland. Donald was born a year earlier than Ally and started his Junior football career with Cattofield, an Aberdeen club that disbanded in 1961. He signed for Montrose a couple of years before Ally joined Cardiff City. He had two seasons at Links Park (19 league games and 2 goals).

A good send off for Ali Brack this afternoon, the crematorium was packed, standing room only. Good to see old friends from Royal Mail as well as the football club.

That's good news. Sadly I found out that one of Ali's former team mates, Trevor Peck, has also just passed away.

Terrible coincidence. Peck and Brack formed one of the early defences I remember, along with Madely and George Bassett. Happy days.
