In the nonleague paper today it states that Worcester won with the last kick of the match. But this is incorrect. Nuneaton were allowed to kick-off again, then the final whistle sounded. Well done the City. The guy who sat behind me constantly barracked McGregor. You should have seen his face when the winning goal had gone in. It was a picture!!! A trifle pedantic, Tony, but technically correct. It is impossible to win a game with the last kick of a game, as it has to restart before the final whistle can be blown. Yesterday was just such an occasion. Nice pedantry Tony. I doff my cap to you!

"It is impossible to win a game with the last kick of a game..." - No it's not; if a penalty is awarded right at the end of time added on the game has to be extended to allow the penalty to be taken. That would then be the last kick of the game. Correct Timothy. Another piece of fine pedantry on this thread. georgethebassett, you have been owned!

On pain of death don't call me Timothy! I was only ever called that when a boy if I was in trouble - hence I prefer the diminutive (is that pedantic enough?).

Apologies Tim. Great pedantry none the less.

One of my aims with the matchday music is to try and make the players feel more at home, and therefore more comfortable, at the Lane. To try and achieve this I play music that they like, or are likely to like, during their warm up. I get my information from the Q&A at the back of the programme which asks what is currently on their ipod's (I did request Carl, who thought it was a good idea, to pass on an email on the subject to each player at the start of the season but never had any answers, but then he has had quite a lot to do and probably forgot). It is only a little thing but you have to start somewhere, and I did spot Marc McGreggor playing air guitar to the Smiths. And this is something that doesn't happen away from home? You know where I'm going here don't you? No it doesn't happen away but then neither does the Brookside and stand moaners, as soon as someone makes a mistake.

But they were there when SGL was a fortress! Maybe getting players to listen to music before a game, when they should be focussing on football isnt such a good idea. I dont like the sound of players air guitaring during a warm up, that shows a distinct lack of focus on the job in hand.

Not wishing to be pedantic, but it is possible, the "kick-off" could be restarted with a player getting down on his knees and heading the ball off the centre spot!!

If time is up after the goal is scored but before the restart then there would be no restart.

That raises a good point, after a goal is scored, should the ref stop the clock? After all, a minute can be lost between a goal being scored and the restart?

Can anyone give me an example where a game has ended with a goal being scored (other than in a penalty shoot out?) I can't think of one.

There was no West Germany kick off after Geoff Hurst scored his famous "there's some people on the pitch" goal in 1966.

It's very little different from when there is a small delay between, say, a free kick being awarded then taken. Except when some overpaid buffoon goes on a wild goal celebration. Although if any players are deliberately delaying the restart then the time should be added on and the guilty player(s) cautioned.

It always makes me laugh when you see a team score in the dying minutes, and one of their players races to get the ball out of the net, wrestling it out of a goalies hands if need be, and sprints to the centre circle to put the ball down. Meanwhile the other team, the ones who will be restarting the game, just slowly slope around trudging into position to restart. The game cant be restarted until they get round to it, regardless of how quickly the ball got back onto the centre circle!!

Kinda agree, at least for me, but a lot of players do seem to like the latest 'tunes', to relax themselves before a game. Given in the case of their relative 'yoof', they seem to prefer drum'n'bass and the like, personally could definitely do without!

Whilst sitting in the stand with my wife at Nuneaton, a supporter of the home team sat 2 rows behind us, and if the referee had listened to him every City player would have been booked or sent off.
He paid particular attention to McGregor, giving him a right roasting whenever he came within earshot. But when McGregor scored the winner, I was able to turn round and sing the 'ITMA' theme tune to him, 'It's That Man Again'. His wife burst out laughing, but he didn't respond, but his face was a black as thunder.

Don't people get so uptight watching football? And most of them have no idea about the rules!

Don't people get so uptight watching football? And most of them have no idea about the rules! Couldn't agree more - the number of times I've heard fans shouting at an assistant for being slow to raise his/her flag before the player has been active. And it's always fascinating watching a game as a neutral - you quickly realise how wrong supporters often are are about decisions made by the officials!
