Watching the Swans give Horsham a drubbing on the box this evening (albeit after a spirited opening from the Hornets) made me recall the six goal defeat we suffered against Swansea in December, 1981, when they were in the top flight and managed by John Toshack. Leighton James ran us ragged. A good turn out of City fans kept singing all night and I think it was fairly late when we finally got back to the Lane! Happy days.

Swansea were top of Division 1 at the time and fielded pretty much a full strength team - Dai Davies in goal, Robbie and Leighton James, John Mahoney, Alan Curtis were all Welsh international players. Robbie James scored after two minutes and the outcome was pretty inevitable after that. Jimmy Cumbes kept us in the game for 20 minutes before James got a second, and Leighton James and Gary Stanley made it four before half time.
We did have the chance to get a goal back when the legendary Clive Thomas gave us a penalty for a debatable trip on Paul Hunt, but Jimmy Brown missed it. Brian Attley made it 5-0 and Robbie James finished off with his third to make it 6-0.
It's the only time City have ever faced the team at the top of the top division in a competitive match. Swansea really did have a good team at the time - the put five past Leeds on the opening day of the 81/2 season and I think had beaten Liverpool just before our game.
We took quite a few coaches and I recall made most of the noise that night - the attendance was just under 5,000. And yes, I also remember it being very late when we got back. I think it snowed just after and it's the nearest I can remember to a white Christmas in Worcester.

As usual a mine of useful facts Ju! Many thanks and btw thanks for the proey this season - it is always a good read.
Now - without looking it up -
a) name the 6 other league sides that City played in competitive matches during the 80's
b) who scored City's last goal of the 1980's?

Id forgotten all about the missed penalty - Jimmy Brown, not one of my favourite City players.
Ealing, if you've cleared your desk for Christmas, can I email you a few dozen Year 6 English reports? Be as creative as you like!

Yes, the Wyvern Cup in 1987. Think we lost heavily from memory. 5-1 or 5-2.

I wasn't including that as a competitive match - after all we had Tommy Hughes in goal!!!

We also visited Shrewsbury in the Welsh Cup the same season we beat Plymouth Argyle if I remember correctly. And the crowd was ..............segregated! The local police had had some trouble when Shrews knocked Man City out of the FA Cup and were still on a short fuse. I seem to remember being asked to remove my club colours in a typical piece of police overkill.

A couple more to test you out
1. Name City's 5 Chairmen during the 80's?
2. Which two clubs did City thrash 8-0 during the decade and who thumped us 8-0 at the Lane during the same decade?
3. Which City players were sent off in FA Cup ties against a) Wycombe b) Maidstone and c) Dartford?
and no cheating!

Folkesone Invicta was one of the 8-0s. It got a mention when we beat Bath City 7-0 a few years back.

chairmen must have included George Goode, Gerald Turner, Barrly Connally and I think Eddie Williams became Chairman before Connally came in.
I remember the Folkstone thrashing (even though they had a legend in goal!) and we thrashed Merthyr in some tinpot competition.
Sending off? Paul Moss at Dartford for doing nothing! no idea about Wycombe, total guess but was it Barry Lowe at Maidstone??

If Connally doesnt, then Sorensen can't either. I'll go for Sam Hewlett and Ken Parkinson

Arsenal Reserves beat us 8-0 at the Lane, with 5 goals from Martin Hayes and 3 from Raphael Meade. Geordie Armstrong had just taken over as City manager, hence the Gooners connection.

Hewlett correct. 1 to get - clue - initials BB
Arsenal is correct. Hate to see the score if we played their second string today! 6-3 at Andfield last season was scary enough.
