We are all used to the “comings and goings” of players but I must admit I do not understand the freedom players have at this level to move between clubs. My excuse is that I am used to the Scottish system where the term “amateur player” still exists and the process, at least to me, is easier to understand.
Here, in simple terms(!), is the Scottish system. Can anyone tell me how the English system differs?
PROFESSIONAL PLAYER – registered with the Scottish Football Association (SFA) and is playing in the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) or below in non-league semi-professional football. He has a contract with his club and is paid.
PROFESSIONAL NON-CONTRACT PLAYER – registered with the SFA, playing below the SPFL but in non-league semi-professional football and who is not paid. He has an agreement to play for his club that lapses at the end of the season.
Normal transfer/loan arrangements mutually agreed between the player and clubs are in place for the players in these categories.
Everyone else is an AMATEUR PLAYER playing below semi-professional level and is not paid. An amateur player can move up to a professional club subject to 7-days’ notice of approach.
