Well that was a wake-up call. Newark were big, strong and quick. Played a simple “get it forward quickly and directly” game, with some big lads up front. We went flat four at the back with Mewies in front as protector, but they just bypassed him and we were effectively playing with ten men first half. Ted Cann made some great saves to keep them at bay, but when the opener came it was a bit soft, long throw flicked on and bundled very slowly in at the far post, I think off Nyeko but they gave it to their big man. Locko then equalised with a quality left foot finish, cut in from the right and bamboozled two defenders before curling it past the keeper. Just as we were thinking about making our way to the bar for half time they went 2-1 up, another soft goal with a late deflection doing for Cann. For the first half hour of the second half we just weren’t in the game. Newark added another soft third then a shocker from the ref gifted them a fourth quickly from the spot. Enter Jak Jeys. Ten minutes to go he smashed a 30+ yard free kick top bins, then arrived on the back stick to put away a low cross from Luke English that had evaded everyone. Game on but it wasn’t to be, Newark saw the game out with a mixture of rolling around on the turf and time wasting. Truth be told we didn’t warrant anything out of the game, Newark dominated and could have had ten were it not for Ted Cann.

That's a fair summary. Hard to know if we aren't very good or whether we came up against strong opposition. But in truth Newark could have got 2 or 3 more had it not been for some great saves from Cann.
The last time we conceded 4 in our opening league game was 1966, when we lost 3-4 at Bath City.

I’m surprised by how quiet this forum is at the start of the season.
I didn’t go, but one of my friends did. They described it as ‘humiliation after humiliation’. Sometimes I think this is all a bad dream and i’ll wake up and City are still in the VNN.

I haven't been able to see any of the friendlies nor Saturday's match, so haven't had a view so far.
I'll be going Wednesday night...............................

Likewise: though I don't like our midweek fixtures being on a Wednesday. Monday or Tuesday suited me fine. I have other another commitment on Wednesday, which I have had to forego to see City. It'd better be worth it!
