The above two clubs are to merge during the close season according to the Conference's web site and become - wait for it - Hayes and Yeading FC. As both play in Conference South does that mean a reprieve for one of last seasons's bottom three? Hang on a minute - Hayes were in the bottom three! f**k knows what it means; does an extra club get promoted? I think I'll leave all those decisions to them what have to worry about them.

Despite finishing in a relegation position Hayes were due to keep their place in Conference South due to the demotion of Farnborough Town. If the merger with Yeading goes ahead then that will leave Conference South a club short. The usual means by which a shortfall in the number of clubs is made up is that another team is reprieved from relegation. If this were to be a CS side then Weston-super-Mare would stay up but given that CN & CS are meant to pool all eligible clubs and then allocate them places in CN or CS dependent on their geographical location it would surely be fairer for Scarborough to retain their CN place especially as they finished the season in a higher league position than Weston-super-Mare did. If Scarborough were to be beneficiaries of the merger then it is likely that one of the CN clubs would have to transfer to CS with Kettering Town and Worcester City being the most likely candidates for such a move. Fortunately for City, as far as I can see, this is unlikely to happen as the Conference are likely to ignore the pooling agreement as they did when deciding in Leigh R.M.I.'s favour at the end of the 2005/6 season in preference to the more worthy claims of Carshalton Athletic.

According to the Weston-super-Mare website www.westonsupermareafc.co.uk/news.asp they have been given the nod: "Weston Super Mare Football Club have been offered a provisional place in the Conference South league. Farnborough’s financial difficulties have forced their resignation from the League reducing the potential relegatees to two, but a very recent announcement that Hayes and Yeading propose to merge could mean that only one club is relegated so saving Weston from the first relegation in their history. This ‘salvation’ is, however, subject to the FA approving the merger and Weston’s retention in the Conference South."

Worcestersham. Sounds like something cheap, fizzy and stuck in the '60s. Perfect.

Sorry, do teams merge to create benefits? Tell that to the people of Wimbledon, or Leytonstone.

So you think it would be a good idea to merge without it having any benefit?

Do you? it was your suggestion originally

No I do not.
So, why would it be a good move?

Because we could play at Aggborough and watch the trains go past.
In all sensibility it would be a good move for a number of reasons, including a debt free bigger club with existing facilities capable of Football League football. The Directors of both clubs get on and could work together, the fan base would be bigger and it would create a major force in Worcestershire football. Of course, the same can be said of many many mergers, or proposed mergers, such as the Oxford/Reading Thame Valley merger. There are too many football teams fighting over a shrinking pot of revenue, and from a business perspective the non-league or lower league football model simply doesn't make sense. The only thing stopping such sensible business related mergers is the paying customers allegiance to a particular club. No-one who shopped at Safeways really got too concerned about the Morrisons merger/buy-out as there was no specific allegiance to either supermarket. I'm not saying that I would support any kind of merger, unless of course the alternative was that the club disappeared like many have before, and many will in the future. There are precedence set for successful club mergers, Dagenham and Redbridge springs to mind.

Hinckley United another. I'd rather merge with Solihull and watch the planes go past myself.

Are there any fans of the old Dons who travel to Milton Keynes? Or have they all shifted their allegiances to AFC Wimbledon?

I think what Hinckley Athletic and Town had in their favour was that they were both representing the same town. I'm not saying a Worcester/Kiddy merge would or wouldn't work, but it'd have to be beneficial to both Kidderminster and Worcester for me to support it and I can't see that being the case.

That is true Darrell, but how about Dagenham and Redbridge (which itself was Leytonston/Ilford - formerly Leytonstone and Ilford, and Walthamstow) So there are 4 teams which over a period of time merged into one stronger team representing 4 different "towns" and 4 different sets of fans. It depends what you mean by "beneficial" as well. Two clubs with varying money problems (its not all roses at Kiddy, ask the players about their Wembley suits, shirts and shoes!!) could solve their financial issues, one very good ground capable of league football already. It could work, however!!!! I am of course with you on this, no one really wants their club to merge do they?

Only if we were allowed to keep our name, play in a new stadium in Worcester and see KH closed down. I'd accept that.
