Was going to go camping over this weekend but decided against due to a flat waterwing. So I started looking around ont' internet where I found that the Hay Festival was in full swing and I had forgotten again. Anyway to my amazement one of my favourite albums was being re-created live in a one-off event.
A few of you, of a certain age and musical persuation, may remember the low-fi classic Colossal Youth by Cardiff band Young Marble Giants, released back in 1980. It's one of those records that I have played on a regular basis (once every couple of months) since it's release, and I never grow tired of it's sparse instrumentation and Alison Statton's fragile voice.
Now I sort of have a policy of not buying old albums on CD, going to see bands of my youth reformed etc but this just had to be seen. I readied the missus for dissapointment as they only made that one record and at just over half an hour long it could be one hell of a short gig, but she was up for it.
Things didn't look promising at first. Being a literary festival I didn't expect a support act (it's usually in sit down band straight on herded out at the end so that the hall can be readied for the next event) but we got one called the Wild Beasts, I think. I have been to a awful lot of gigs and seen some shite in my time but rarely have I wanted to leave the room, but I did last night. Avoid this band at all costs unless you enjoy listening to an owl being strangled while being backed by Haircut Ballet.
Then Young Marble Giants took to the stage and were absolutely fantastic. 27 years older but still making the hair on the back of my neck stand up.
One of my favourite gigs ever.
