Taking on the local councilInteresting article on the Canterbury City F.C. website, who have been homeless for 19 years and have recently had a planning application turned down for a new ground in Canterbury. Like us they also have an unsupportive council. Since the planning application was rejected last week, Canterbury City fans have announced they are standing as independent candidates in 10 wards in the local elections in May.

I tried this back a few years ago. Plenty of initial interest - but when it actually came down to it - I was the only one who actually ran, in St Stephen against the bullfrog in an ill fitting suit called Gareth Jones.

64 votes if I recall Croc, from around the vicinity of Perdiswell! That's more people than belong to Protect Perdiswell Park and Friends of Perdiswell combined! It was good fun canvassing in the "lions den" around Blanquettes, with absolutely no negative comments to either of us on the doorsteps. I think we could have made a difference if more has stood in other wards where it was possible to dent the Tory majorities, but yep, quite a lot of talk, but just us two who actually did it.

It definitely gave me a greater interest and insight into politics that I never had before.
The day we had the count for the locals - to see Jones having a public heart attack and demanding recounts when it was close between him and the Green with us lower orders having a slight influence was superb.
