Jim Standen never played for Worcester City! He was a Worcestershire CCC player who also kept goal for West Ham United! Jim Standen’s only connection with City is that at Luton he was understudy to Ron Baynham who had joined the Hatters from City in 1951 and went on to be capped three times for England. However, despite having no City connections it is worth mentioning his achievements in 1964/65. In 1964 he won a FA Cup winners’ medal with West Ham United and then immediately helped Worcestershire win the cricket County Championship (and topped the national bowling averages). In 1965 he returned to play at Wembley again with the Hammers first at the start of the season to share the Charity Shield with Liverpool and at the end of the season to win a European Cup Winners’ Cup winners’ medal. A real all-rounder.
