Thank you for posting that link. I never tire of reading about that match. I would, however, pick it up on one sentence: “ Reds manager Phil Taylor clearly wasn’t too concerned about his side’s chances, because he dropped club legend Billy Liddell.” To put this into context, the great Billy Liddell was in the final stages of his football career in the 1958/59 season and was not a first team regular at the time Liverpool played City on 15 January 1959. His last first team game before the visit to Worcester was on 22 November 1958 against Bristol Rovers. Louis Bimpson had replaced him as first choice centre forward in October 1958 and had played 12 games up to the visit to Worcester and was the Reds centre forward on that fateful day! Afterwards Alan Arnell took over in the Reds Number 9 shirt before Louis Bimpson returned on 20 March 1959. Billy Liddell's next game was not until 27 March 1959 against Barnsley. The FA Cup tie against City was, however, the first FA Cup tie Billy Liddell had missed since making his Liverpool debut in a 3rd Round tie on 5 January 1946. In all he played 42 FA Cup ties and scored 13 goals. Prior to the match Liverpool manager Phil Taylor said: “ I know Worcester aren’t Second Division class, but they will be difficult to beat on their own ground.” Taking all that together. Liverpool played their first choice centre forward against City and there is no evidence that Reds manager Phil Taylor unduly underestimated their opponents.

Did WCFC really beat Liverpool? Did we really have the best team in non-league football in the seventies? Did we really have a club that valued its supporters and community? Or did I just dream it all in some age-induced nap?
