Apart from how Jeff Lynne still looks the same ( looks bloody good for 69 ), how well they played, how many hits they had, the wonderful sound and harmonies, and the attractive female backing singer and violinists..............I have a WCFC related question..........the prize is that I will buy a pint at Bromsgrove to whoever gives me the correct answer.....
What links ELO and St George's Lane ?

What links ELO and St George's Lane ? Complete guess! Blues supporter Jeff Lynne attended one of the pre-season friendlies City played against Birmingham City at St George's Lane.

From what I recall of the early days of ELO and pre-ELO when hair was long and time was short it was not particularly “trendy” for rock musicians to declare they were football supporters. Elton John and Rod Stewart changed that. However, I do recall ELO and some earlier Birmingham bands were not shy about their football allegiances and even played the game. Are we looking at one of the early members of ELO who found themselves watching City at St George’s Lane?

No......but you're getting warmer !

OK let's have another go! I do remember local newspaper coverage of Jeff Lynne marrying in Malvern in 1970 and either bride or groom or both wore blue and white. So that gives Jeff Lynne a local connection at the time. Any warmer or off the boil?

Anything to do with former bassist Kelly Groucutt?

Here's a link, The Move (Lynne and Roy Wood) did a lot of recording at The old Smithy Kempsey, which was owned by Muff Murfin, whose wife was a teacher at Dines Green School. Muff wrote a Christmas song called Christmas Is Coming, which was recorded at The Old Smithy featuring children from dines Green School, including one of the present Directors of the football club!

Auldreekie - off the boil......... Brooksider - very warm with Kelly Groucutt........... Using Brooksider's thoughts I do know that Kelly Groucott recorded an album himself at the Old Smithy. So was Kelly Groucott playing when Roy Wood re-recorded " I wish it could be Christmas everyday" accompanied by Kempsey Primary School pupils. This would make any of the accompanying children around 40-45 today so perhaps one of those is the St George's Lane link? Interesting that you ask what connects ELO and St George's Lane and not what connects ELO and Worcester City FC.

Auldreekie - Nothing to do with music as such, but you are getting warmer by noting.........." Interesting that you ask what connects ELO and St George's Lane and not what connects ELO and Worcester City FC. "

OK putting all these clues together I reckon Kelly Groucott - did he live in Worcester? - may have at one time played solo or in a band at the Cavalier Tavern.

Did he have his 'smalls' washed at St George's laundry???

Well I doubt it is a connection with the primary school as he was brought up in Birmingham, so that leaves Dodger's laundry link or living in the area.

Auldreekie - in your posts, you've said all the components .........just put it in one answer..............

Thanks for the encouragement. I am not giving up!
So the ELO link must be Kelly Groucott who sadly died in Worcester in 2009 and so may have had connections to the city later on although he was brought up in Birmingham.
The St George’s Lane link sounds unlikely to be a link to City and football but a link to the area.
There is no music in the answer.
So Watson this leaves me to ask why would a musician visit St George’s Lane if he was not playing music, going to primary school as a pupil or watching City? True he could have visited the Primary School later but that would be as a musician and therefore involve music. So that leaves me with going to the Cavalier Tavern or living in the area. It is difficult to think that a musician used the pub as his watering hole if he was not involved in the music scene unless of course he lived nearby and it was his local when say walking his dog along the canal tow path.
However, has Alwaysnextyear given a subtle clue by saying “the prize is that I will buy a pint at Bromsgrove to whoever gives me the correct answer.....”
So I am going with the pub link but remembering I have the components of the answers.
ANSWER
Kelly Groucott, former vocalist and bassist of the Electric Light Orchestra, lived or had friends around or near the St George’s Lane area of Worcester and would occasionally drop into the nearby Cavalier Tavern. His friends’ children attended the St George’s Primary School.

Would it have anything to do with another of the Groucott family playing for the City? The name Simon keeps springing to mind?

No to both Auldreekie and Croc ! But so close.......
It is indeed Kelly Groucutt.........but as Auldreekie asks " So Watson this leaves me to ask why would a musician visit St George’s Lane if he was not playing music, going to primary school as a pupil or watching City? " Why indeed ?

No to both Auldreekie and Croc ! But so close....... It is indeed Kelly Groucutt.........but as Auldreekie asks " So Watson this leaves me to ask why would a musician visit St George’s Lane if he was not playing music, going to primary school as a pupil or watching City? " Why indeed ? You could go to St George's Church to get married using St George's Lane South. So I will go for that he married his second wife there.

No to Dodger and Auldreekie, but Auldreekie alluded to the answer yesterday, as to what early Birmingham bands did in their spare time !

Auldreekie - Sorry for the late reply - I've been away.
CONGRATULATIONS !!!!! A PINT OF BROMSGROVE'S FINEST IS YOURS ( for getting the answer and for your never say die attitude ) !
Kelly Groucutt achieved the notable double of playing music for ELO, and playing football on the hallowed turf at St George's Lane !
I think it was 1976/77 ( at the height of ELO's fame ) that he played in a charity football match at the Lane for I think, the ATV All Stars Football team. I still have his autograph from the day along with a few others. The team was led by midfield general and self styled " guvnor " Gary Newbon, along with ATV sports presenter Trevor East, ITV sports producer Mark Sharman ( both of whom went on to great things both within ITV Sport and then onto a fledging SKY Sports ). Leading the line up front that day was none other than Birmingham's finest, Jasper Carrott . When I find my autograph book, I'll let you know who else played.
The photo of the Birmingham musicians football team is a great testimony to the past where sides such as this, and the ATV All Stars team, just enjoyed playing football and gave their time up to raise money for charity. With Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne in the front row of the photo, there's no shortage of quality - musical at least ! Well done.

Thanks “Alwaysnextyear” a great question and thanks for the helpful nudges! The ATV All-Stars XI now that does bring back memories! In Scotland we have the wonderfully named “Dukla Pumpherston” who are a charity football team made up of ex-professionals and various others that raise money for good causes in charity matches. I always enjoyed watching charity matches as there were always some players that surprised you! I have a dim memory of watching Basil D’Oliveria turn out in such a game and you could see he could play even though age was not on his side. It was not until later I read that he had played for the South African non-white football team during the Apartheid regime.
I will look forward to receiving my prize!
