Well, half time, 0-0, both teams have had chances, none really clear cut.
Nuneaton have tried from distance, we've just tried. I said before the game that id be happy with a draw, but this game needs a goal, it could go our way. Come on city!

And the Nuneaton 6 now off too, two yellows. Links have more control then the ref, he is dire.

Ended 1-0 to Nuneaton, I have no idea what the ref was doing in the second half, and I wasn't the only one!
Didn't deserve to lose, but we can look forward with our heads held up after that.

Truly shocking performance by the referee. We've had some bad ones over the years but this fella was something else. The Burton booking was the biggest joke. Showed him a yellow because he thought Burton tripped him over. Well if he honestly thought that was the case then it must be a straight red. Annoying to lose because they weren't anything special. Anyway deep breath & calm down.

An outrageous penalty decision from the ref. Firstly a foul conceded to Nuneaton on the edge of our box. The rules allow for a quick free quick to confer an advantage to the attacking team. But this was NOT a quickly taken free kick, there was a delay as Nuneaton players began to gather around the ball and City began to organise a wall and the defence. In such cases the kick should not be taken until the ref blows his whistle. He didn't blow to allow the kick to be taken. So when they suddenly flicked the ball forward a City player in the penalty area. ( I couldn't see who) apparently handled it to halt play as the Ref hadn't blown to give permission for the free kick to be taken. And the idiot Rdveree them gives a penalty that cost us the game! Ridiculous, not to mention his other red and yellow cards!!
I always try to be grown up and give the officials the benefit of the doubt, but on occasions we really do suffer at our level with the quality of the refereeing.
On the plus side I thought Alex Gudger was outstanding, so composed on the ball and never put a foot wrong, he was my man of the match. If I was being critical I would say that Ashley Vincent should have come on far earlier as he looked a threat but only had 15 or so minutes to make a real impact, Tristan and Dion were struggling to make an impression.
Very, very frustrating as we deserved the draw the Ref denied us.

City did okay today but were lacking in the final 3rd. I can hardly remember their keeper having a save to make. Having said that somebody said Nunny are full-time and they were nothing special. As others have said referee had a nightmare 2nd half!!!! Gave them a farcical penalty and then missed an obvious push on Nti for a city pen, for which Geddes got sent off for mouthing off in the aftermath!! Also, why when he sent their player off, did he not award a city pen? ?- the ball was still in play

Absolutely disgusting refereeing that second half...i'll go further and say it was scandalous...the amount of times their players were holding shirts or grabbing our players when we tried to set up attacks and he did nothing!! Farcical penalty decision...and then the Nti incident when he was blocked off from making an attack into their area down the right side, that was what led to Geddes frustrations and his sending off.
I was told that in the walk off at HT the Nuneaton manager was in the referees ear and 'bullied' him into that absolute pathetic, wimpish cop out of a second half display...up till HT I did actually enjoy the game as we were quite neat, composed and looked solid at the back restricting them to shots from way outside the box, a pity we're missing Lee Hughes for 4 games because his potency would've given us that extra edge today.

Something must have happened at half time, we're used to refs being inconsistent, but he was just something else. At half time I said to my granddad next to me ''the ref has made one or two decisions I don't agree with, but he's probably been the best ref we've had this season'' - How wrong was I.
I couldn't make out what happened with the penalty, as far as I'm aware, they should have waited for his whistle and didn't. Too many other moments to list in the second half where me and half the stand seemed to be going ''What?!'' to his (non)decisions.
On the plus side, defence looked very solid again today, all Nuneatons efforts were from range, Sharpe and Gudger both did excellent, and it showed how much Sam has come on by the reception he got when warming down after coming off, and Vaughan had another solid game, with a bit of a highlight seeing him come forward for the corner right at the end.

You cannot make it up but the ref is Darren STRAIN who is a cheat and should be expecting a demotion soon.

Our defence looked pretty solid today but up front we never really troubled their keeper and for a long time it looked as if one goal would decide the outcome. Our main problem is that we don't get the ball whipped into the opponents penalty box quickly enough and when we do,it's generally a poor or weak cross.
Just to top it all,the referee was shocking.

Geddes getting a straight red would, I imagine, rule him out from any FA Cup first round tie should we progress beyond Gateshead. What a contrast to last season. After all that was said by the management earlier in the season about lack of discipline and cheap sendings off he really should have known better.

I imagine he has called him a cheat , or questioned his integrity in some other way. You can call them c***s but not c****s!! I won't go over the same ground, as everyone else has already said anything that I could about the referee's performance, but I will give you my opinion as to why he didn't give us a penalty. The keeper catches the ball and then gets offended by Gudger challenging him. The referee gives nothing and the Nuneaton players then get all stroppy and the shove takes place which, correctly, gets their guy the second booking. It then looked to me like the ref was about to give us the penalty but then either decides to consult his linesman or, more likely, is browbeaten into doing it by the Nuneaton players. The linesman then states that , in his opinion, Gudgers tackle was a foul. This means that, if the foul is given, the game was stopped before the push hence no pen and a card to Gudger for the "foul". This is only my opinion-might be complete garbage!!

the Ref spoilt what could have been a good game, i think the City Boys were pretty good, Sean G needs to think before he makes stupid errors, & think what he has again done to the team... Ellis needs to man up, when the dispute was going on wit Danny N where was the so called captain, on the other side of the pitch half way line, Sam, Tom & Alex all had brilliant games, Nathan was again solid... lets keep going heads held high, lets get a good result on Saturday at Gateshead, then have a great draw on Monday...

A game spoilt by a referee who was got at half time by two Nuneaton players and the manager as he left the field. Their was three key decisions, the free kick and penalty for the Nuneaton goal, the Daniel Nti penalty decision and the incident involving the sending off, when Alex Gudger was pushed in the area when the ball was still live, no penalty given, the referee was surrounded by the Nuneaton players as he consulted the linesman. Overall we didn't deserve to lose the game, Nuneaton were well organised and shutdown the space as expected from a full time outfit. We lacked any threat up front without Lee Hughes and his four match absence will be costly to the club, Nathan Vaughan and the back four did well. The Sean Geddes sending off was again unnecessary, for a player who hasn't really performed to last seasons standards and must be pushing the patience of the management team and another suspension. With another three games without Lee Hughes, its down to how we deal with the problem up front, Daniel Nti and Deon Burton are certain with the option of either Dunkley, Vincent or Sean Harrod. A long trip to Gateshead on Saturday and hopefully another cup run, a draw would be nice and back to Aggborough on Monday night.

Well, what can you say? Up to half-time I actually thought the ref had a good game: what happened in the interval to turn him into a complete idiot?
It was Ellis Deeney who attempted to catch the ball in the aftermath of the free-kick and thus gave away the penalty; but since the referee blew every other time when he was ready for the kick to be taken, who could blame Ellis for thinking the kick had to be taken again? (Which it should have been).
I felt completely cheated by that decision, and I expect that was what upset Sean Geddes so much that he mouthed off at the referee; if I was the club (depending on what he actually said) I would ask for a personal hearing. It seemed very harsh.
How Nuneaton can live with themselves having earned victory that way I don't know. It ain't the sort of thing City would do.

A personal hearing with Sean spouting his best Black Country dialect, could well turn the alleged 'abusive' language into a total misunderstanding as Sean was actually 'praising' the ref.......it was just that the ref didn't understand what was being said.
Yah wuz bostin, ref.

Whilst the ref was absolutely awful, our game management was just as bad. The Nuneaton players soon worked out that having a go at the awful ref was only going to make him make even more bad decisions, so they let us do the work for them. With backchatting refs, there will only ever be one winner and now we have to do without Geddes, who was finally starting to show some form. 6 sendings off in a season is bad enough, but by the middle of October is absolutely dreadful, and is costing us match after match. We appear to be a petulant side at times, and Carl and Matt have to sort it out ASAP. Everyone wants their side to play with passion and desire, but the numerous reds and yellows aren't for tough tackling but generally brainless play and indiscipline. Whilst the ref gave them the points, he wasn't to blame for our misplaced passing, and our complete inability to hold the ball up front, and retain the ball in the final third. The suspended Hughes was missed immeasurably, with Burton always coming short as opposed to playing on the shoulder of the last defender. No goal threat at all. As good as we were against Solihull, with the exception of the defence, the opposite applied against Nuneaton.

It seemed very harsh. I wasn't at the game and haven't seen highlights of the incident but if he was sent off for dissent then that's completely unacceptable, irrespective of what has gone on before. He needs to show some self discipline. The suggestion of a personal hearing condones this behaviour for me and if you start making concessions for abuse towards referees then where does it stop. Footballers should take a leaf out of the book of rugby players and show more respect for the referees, even (dare I say it) for incompetent ones.

Totally correct, even for incompetent ones. We have to get more savvy in these situations, and show self discipline.

As good as we were against Solihull, with the exception of the defence, the opposite applied against Nuneaton. Absolutely spot on regarding the Nuneaton players and the ref. Here was my post in the 'Refereeing Decisions' thread back in March. There have been a few comments on this forum about the standard of refereeing along the lines of "we've had this ref before and he was useless .........etc.".
From my experience of playing local football (admittedly, a few years ago now) there were only 2 things you hoped could, or would, happen regarding the referee.
Firstly you needed to chat to the ref during the warm up kick about and during the game just to be pleasant (topics could include "How's the wife and kids, or did you see that episode of Crossroads on the telly last night"). This would go some way to ensure any refereeing decisions mainly went in your favour (you almost became the ref's pal .
The second thing needed was for the opposition (players and touchline pals) to be highly critical of the first decision that went against them, and then remain critical throughout the match. This would go a longer way to ensure any refereeing decisions went in your favour.
Referees (like most folk) never forget situations or people that have 'upset' them so it's quite possible that what we now see at the Soggborough games is not 'bad' refereeing as such but more likely 'unfavourable' decisions based on historical events.
This is where player discipline comes in. Upset the ref and he (or she, of course) will always have the last say!Dodger.

If Sean told the ref he was incompetent that would be classed as fair comment! After all if we encounter incompetence we are unlikely to just shrug our shoulders and say "c'est la vie"

Nuneaton video of the incident here (although omits the intervening period between the free kick being given and taken). Not a free kick in the first place for me. The Nuneaton player has bought that. Weak refereeing all round.
