I guess its a shame that Worcester City werent aware of his talents. We're still basing footballing ability on whether a kid wants to go to Worcester Tech at the age of 16 or not! We're still not forging any real links with junior clubs. One day hopefully that will change. Having said that, playing non-league football is really not that appealing to many young kids, who strangely enough think that going to Uni and getting an education and occupation is more important And I can fully understand that.

This is kind of what I was trying to say in my original post. It is a shame that we didnt pick up on this sort of talent. I suppose it is the osrt of thing that George would have picked up in his day? I know youhave siad it too JCP, there is talent out there if we could afford to pay someone to go and find it. The likes of Cheltenham have full time staff sniffing out this sort of talent. Every player has to start some where and non league isn't the worst place in the world to get spotted. It worked for John Barton and plenty more since

Every player has to start some where and non league isn't the worst place in the world to get spotted. It worked for John Barton and plenty more since It just doesnt work that way anymore. I remember going to Walsall for a FA Under 16 game against Walsall Academy, the vast majority of the kids there could hardly speak English, although local lads Nick Ingram and Matty Oliver were there! Of all the lads from Worcestershire selected for that game, and every other game that season, only Harry Hooman has gone on to link up with a League team. Zac Costello spent some time at Kiddy, then on loan to Evesham, he wont play at any higher level. Dan Polan warms the bench for the time being at City! Julian Triana still plays at Stourport Swifts I think. but these are the only lads still playing competitive football out of the best 24 that the County could muster, and they werent a bad team either, pretty much the same set of lads represented Worcestershire Schools, and got to the semi-finals of the National Schools Cup, beating the likes of Warkwickshire along the way who had a number of Coventry City academy players in their team. These lads are all 20 now, so a career in League football is not going to happen. The gulf between kids playing in non-league and the foregin lads coming in to League Academies is massive. There will be possible exceptions, but not enough to gamble your chances in life over! City have lost a few kids to careers over the years, Ronnie Walker, Dan Jones, both very good players who left to pursue university degrees. Its for this reason that I don't think youth is the answer at non-league level anymore. Its not seen as a starting point to a career as a professional footballer, it might be seen as a supplement to the day job, but not much more. Sad but true!

Would agree with most of what Brooksider said, just a shame we couldn't pick up of these talented youngsters either en route to higher things, or even after they get rejected at a higher level? And disappointing they go to local 'rivals' without possibly doing something for their local club.... Especially as most of them won't reach the heights.

I think picking them up on the way down is the key. Decent players released by bigger local clubs, as some of them want to showcase themselves to get back into the League, and some of them no longer wish to play League football, but need the additional money.

Tom Thorley could be classed as a top player on way down, altho the convenience of being eductaed in Worcester at the same time helps. Danny Glover, Tom Evans, Simon Richman are all league players now plying their trade with us and think we would all agree have made a difference. It does happen but maybe on a smaller scale than we would like and limited to those players that are already known to Mark C and Carl H as we don't have much of a talent spotting network. Pikey is another who was spotted and is going the other way (maybe?) on the way up. Would be nice to see him play as he looked useful but the midfield is looking strong with Thorley, Cartwright et al and can't break in.

Yep, agreed, the policy of bringing in these types of players is very sound, and will make a difference. I fear that Pike is playing at as high a level as he'll play, and will probably head back to Bridgenorth Town either on loan or permanent. He should at least be making the bench, and he's not.

I think we kind of predicted that. And I see he is trying to place jamie price too. Shame for both of them as they aren't bad players. They would have been in last years side easily but I suppose that shows the way we are now going under Carl and the new board.... Hopefully in the right direction

Exactly, they looked ok in last years team. But as last years team was one of the worst ever, put together by probably the worst manager the club ever had the misfortune to employ, it doesnt really say much. Its a shame the club cant afford to run a reserve team any more, as Pike and Price could have been kept occupied. I think they're probably Zameretto League players at best, and last season we had the "quality" of a Zameretto League side. Onwards and most definitely upwards!!! Especially if Carl can keep his ear to the ground about players being released from higher clubs. Forget the kids, quality players is the way forward!!
