As if our 6 pointer wasn't enough of an incentive to travel to the historic county town of Sussex, we thought we'd encourage you further by arranging a beer festival the night before too! With 20 ales, ciders and lager on offer, plus wine and delicious food we aim to make it a night to remember. Tickets are limited and priced £5 in advance, £6 on the night. This includes a souvenir glass. If anyone wants to travel down on the Friday and needs accommodation, send me a PM and I'll try to sort out a discount at local hotels and B&Bs. Forget about the worries of relegation for one night and celebrate the love of beer! Full details at www.lewesfc.comLee Cobb, General Manager Lewes FC

About half are local and Harveys (Lewes) have brewed one especially for the event. The recipe was found in an old diary and hasn't been brewed since the 1880's! For a not very up to date list see www.lewesfc.comI would post a more up to date list but I'm a bit busy today

Is there any reason why WCFC couldnt run a beer festival? Not being a drinker I don't really know what a beer festival is, or how its set up, ore importantly how it makes money?? But is it possible?

No reason what so ever ! It would take some planning ( I have run a few so know a little about it) A lot will depend on the brewery the club uses, what the tie and agreement is with them and the facilities they provide. Very quickly and in no detail but If you want to run a real ale festival the brewery will need to either give the club permission for the club to order from another supplier (micro brewery for example) or agree to place an order the beer on their behalf. Most breweries have a list of guest ales you can buy in any given month. The brewery will need to set up a stillage rack about 5 - 7 days before for it to settle as I presume it will be gravity fed as we don't do any cask ale at present so wont have the facility to rod them. They can provide chilling rods too if required. Other than that it is just around the planning and lay out of it all as once it is in place you don't want to move the casks at all. Be a good money earner if planned correctly!

They were a great bunch. Well run bar too. First time I have been to Lewes but a good set up. Shame you couldn't get completely around the ground though. The scoreboard corner being fenced off was a bit of a pain but would give good crowd segregation. And there players were a fairly good bunch too although their 'keeper got a bit upset at full time LOL At least the subs were entertaining at half time Hell of a great day out hic!

A lot will depend on the brewery the club uses, what the tie and agreement is with them and the facilities they provide. If the agreement was negotiated by a certain former chairman, the club will probably not be able to hold a beer festival as it would then be in breach of contract and liable to a fine!

I think it is normally the Brewery that would set the guidelines etc but I know what you mea Mark. I have not had the pleasure of seeing the contract between Brewery and Club but I wouldn't imagine we are on the best price you could obtain or the most preferential terms for anything else.... Hopefully we have learnt from our mistakes for when such things get renegotiated by our current board

Did anyone find out what kind of money Lewes make from a beer festival?

I left about 30 mins after the game and there wasn't a huge amount left. If you consider they were all casks (9 gallon or approx 72 pints) and I think they had about 12 of them Wastage is around 5-10 % and they were selling at £2.50 a pint. When I sold my pub last year I was buying it in at around £70 - £80 per cask or around a pound a pint so you can see the sort of profit they should have made and they charged an entry fee on the Friday night I believe....

About 10 years ago when freddie had a real weight problem, Lancashire got a dietician to follow him round to see if they could find ways of improving his lifestyle They went for a meal together and the dietician listened to his order and made the sort of changes you would expect, salad instead of the roast potatoes etc. She then asked him what he would normallly drink and he said beer. So she suggested when he went to the bar he changed from beer to wine. Freddie came back with...... A pint of wine. "well that is what you suggested luv' it would normally be a pint of beer!"

Love that story Of course this beggars the question. Why havent WCFC ever organised a beer festival at SGL? It looks like an easy couple of grand to be made. Could you do one a month?

Sounds good - you must have invited Jack Simmons and Freddie Flintoff along?! No but Freddie did visit my club the day after his infamous visit to no 10. and the open top bus ride after winning the ashes. The gig was a long standing commitment to give prizes to our junior cricketers. I'm sure he had 101 better things to do with himself that night but he turned up smack on time and was an absolute gentleman. The kids lapped it up and if he wasn't a real life hero before that night, he certainly was after it. Top man - as much respect for him for that nights work than anything he ever did in an England shirt. I'm not sure you could do a beer fest every month, I reckon the novelty would wear off very quickly, but every 6 months or so certainly. I think we are likely to have 20-30 beers on tap at the MCC in a fortnight, all it needs is a bit of organisation and some assistance from friendly CAMRA folk.

You wouldn't want to do one a month, it wouldn't be a festival then, you become a real ale bar. If you wanted to do that sort of thing you would get rid of some of the Nitro Keg that is behind the bar now and replace it with cask ales. As people take to it you add to the number of pumps. The problem with cask ale is it only really lasts for 7 days at most (that is for stronger ales, a typical 4% will only last 3-5 days). If the club isn't being used regularly there will be a heck of a lot of waste and prove unprofitable. I have never seen the City 'cellar' so couldn't even say if it would be suitable for cask ales. Nitro keg that is there now keeps far easier than cask ale and is far more tolerant of temperature changes and being moved.

Stafford Rangers are organising a beer festival, in conjunction with Titanic Brewery, on May 15/16th to coincide with the FA Cup Final. 12 different beers, each sponsored by a different supporter/company. There's an informative thread on their banter board.

Ideal time for us would have been Easter Bank Holiday. Bath are not so far away and will bring a few up for the day. Might be a bit tight to get it all arranged for then now. Need good advertising. Weather should be a bit better by then too. If you did 10 Firkins you would have about 700 (720 ) pints to go at. Average gate of 500 , should be more like 650 that day? Start it on the Friday night and you should shift most of it. Initial outlay would be £800 - £1000 a grand depending on the deal we have with Banks's who I presume we buy directly off and not through a distributor? Could be less (considerably) if we have a good deal. £2.50 a pint would make a good £1000 profit after wages, waste etc...
