With the help of the Trust I have arranged a Nostalgia Night for Friday, 25 September 2009 in the Legends Bar.
The guest speaker will be former City star Roger Davies, who played a handful of games for us in 1971 before being sold to Derby County for a record fee of £14,000.
He went on to become part of the successful County Championship winning sides of the 1970s and is still very much involved at his old club where he's part of the match commentary team for Ram FM radio.
Roger hasn't been back to Worcester since he left and I know he's really looking forward to coming here.
More details to follow. This is my first attempt at something like this (apart from the get-together to mark the 50th anniversary of the Liverpool match last season). I hope it will go well, if it does I aim to do more such nights over the course of the season.

Despite only playing a handful of games for City, Roger Davies made a big impression on those of us who were fortunate enough to see him in the blue and white stripes.
I hope the evening gets the support it merits, Julian.

Well done Julian, these events are really special, the Boys of 79 was brilliant, and good fun to organise (although getting the phone slammed down when I tried to get in touch with Gary Stevens was "interesting" I don't think the lady who answered was too enamoured!!) I remember phoning Barry Williams (yes, ME!! phoning THE BARRY WILLIAMS) and boy, I couldn't get him off the phone!!!
Hope it really goes well and there is a good turn out - and I imagine this time you'll get some support from the steward at the Legends Bar - thanks for absolutely nothing Mr Prescott, I even had to bring in my own AV stuff!! and cables, and plug the whole lot in!!

I remember seeing Roger Davies playing for City, and then at Derby, and I remember how he used to wear his shirt outside his shorts, and his shorts pulled down quite low. Whilst playing for Dines Green I would copy this style which did wonders for my goalscoring prowess!! Interesting though, a 10 yr old emulating the style of a WCFC player - it wouldn't happen now!! Although I'm just glad that i wasnt 10 at the time of Barry Evans - tight shorts and my legs do not go!! I have an old Playfair non league annual somewhere with a photo of the great South East non-league stalwart Tommy Warrilow, I am convinced that he's either forgotten to put his shorts on, or he's modelling a football thong!!

Roger Davies. he'd be in my all time team - even though he only played a handful of games. Awesome.

When I saw a thread marked 'nostalgia night', I thought that we were going to start reminiscing about those monthly meetings with the board.........remember them?

Couldn't resist adding to this one!
The sale of Roger Davies was a bitter blow to most of us at the time and memories still linger 30 years later.
I often get flashbacks to an amazing incident connected with the transfer,
Returning across the forecourt that evening from one of my frequent 'ground inspections in the dark', the figure hurrying from the car park and almost brushing into me was unmistakably Brian Clough, no question about it. It clicked that there was a board meeting on at the time, and he had obviously turned up in person to clinch the deal. I remember thinking 'God, this is for real' and it was one of those moments.
We had hardly taken the wrapper off the signing of Davies from Bridgnorth that he was on his way to Derby. The fee was £15000 by the way (not 14) and I still wonder if the board negotiated hard enough at the time, but they were desperate.
The case for selling him was put to me as inevitable 'because this lad's going to play for England one day and we can't stand in his way.' Huh! What do you take us for?
Years later I was at a do in Nottingham where Cloughie appeared and I had the chance to say to him 'you broke my heart when you took Roger Davies away from Worcester' and he said absolutely nothing, which was a big disappointment. He signed an autograph page for my 2 boys and I said 'thanks Brian, Forest fan for ever' and he looked hard at me and said 'you mean that' more as a statement of fact than a hopeful question and then I felt bad because I didn't have any reason to like Nottingham Forest even a tiny bit, and I'm sure he knew it.
Some time after this episode I started writing a local newspaper column just for the fun of it, but these memories never featured, so it's been really nice to have had this opportunity at last. Recently came across a box with cuttings from the time and (with loads of Nobby quotes) found them really amusing. The reporting style was opinionated, straight to the point and most importantly people read it and reacted to it. How I would have relished covering the ground move (sic) if all of this had happened in the early eighties!
Hey, thanks for reading this and good luck with the wonderful nostalgia night. It really is good to know that there are still people around the club who care, despite everything that's going on. I'm not going to even try and take sides but the time has surely come for zero tolerance on harming this football club any more. Could (should?) the plans as they exist for selling up and moving be scrapped, right now, and an extensive and intricate 5-year plan drawn up for preserving and protecting (now there's a word if ever there was one!) Worcester City Football Club Ltd at St Georges Lane, with involvement from all parties, creeds, colours and convictions? The Nunnery Way move is not going to happen, at least not for years to come, but in the meantime it seems that the club could well go under.
I don't know because I'm no longer closely involved what may or may not be possible. If I'm talking rubbish, knowing you lot you'll tell me, but for goodness sake is there not someone who can soon put a parcel together to end to all this suffering, or will it just carry on getting worse and soon put an end to the club?
Truly
George Blewin-White
