Given City's disappointing league position and inconsistent performances this season, which players would YOU like to keep around for next season, who would you dump and why?
Let's indulge in a bit of role play: YOU are Worcester City manager and (budgetary concerns aside) which of the current squad of senior players do you believe can help take City forward on the pitch, I'll start:
Danny McDonnell - still a decent keeper at BSS level: KEEP HIM for another season.
Shabir Khan - Worcester's most improved player, and for me the best player this season. If he can continue to play with confidence (without it he still struggles as was evident against Dorchester) he can improve still more: KEEP HIM.
Jon Richardson - started the season looking very accomplished and composed with little hint of extra quality. Seems to have trailed off since December. Over the span of the season I sort of expected a little bit more, particularly in terms of leadership: I would be inclinded to KEEP HIM try and tap his experience a bit more (in terms of helping younger players) but definately desist from having him play in central midfield.
Ollie Barnes - Hmmm...have become less impressed as the season dragged on. Always clutching and grabbing opponents to hide a lack of pace: I would LET HIM GO.
Tom Kemp - Strong, committed and always looks up for it. Good in the air and decent pace for a tall lad, a good all round game: KEEP HIM.
Graham Ward - Steady, passionate and does a job: KEEP HIM for another season
Jamie Price - Like Ollie, I have become more disappointed with him as the season has gone on. Seems to be merely going through the motions. Has some good touches but needs to pick his passes with a little more composure. Inconsistent performer. Oh, and he needs to learn how to tackle properly: on balance, LET HIM GO.
Dave Bampton - Does the donkey work well, but I alway feel that he struggles to keep up with the game, maybe due to his injury problems this season. Have a feeling that he probably won't want to stay at Worcester next season: on balance, LET HIM GO.
Rob Davies - Hasn't really stood out for me. Puts in a really good performance followed by two or three distinctly average games. Decent delivery (sometimes), plenty of effort but ultimatley replaceable: LET HIM GO
Jordan Fitzpatrick - Get the feeling he thinks he's better than he is (maybe he's just a confident lad). However, he has shown, when given a chance, that he has better vision and creativity (something that, in my opinion, is severely lacking throughout the team) than the average City player. I would give him another look, at least through preseason and friendlies etc...
Gary Walker - Another serviceable, unspectacular player at BSS level. Plenty of endeavour, works hard, local lad but replaceable. Would KEEP HIM in a back up role on the condition that Worcester can find an equally hard working but more creative midfielder.
Matt Dodd - Got a big build up from the manager prior to the season. Struggled greatly early on and did not look up to BSS standard. Has pace, yes, but positional play, first touch and dribbling abilities have at times been shockingly bad. Very raw inconsistent talent. But have been impressed in the second half of the season by his willingness to listen and learn from Richard Dryden and as result his positional play and overall awareness have improved greatly. That last point has convinced me to persist with a little longer: KEEP HIM.
Matt Dinsmore - Promising youngster. Willing runner, plenty of energy, local lad and still young enough to mature physically, learn his trade and get better: I would KEEP HIM.
Craig Wilding - Tries hard. Doesn't score enough goals (which could be argued is being symptomatic of the team's lack of creativity). Holds the ball up well but touch lets him down too often, could show more leadership on the pitch. Replaceable: I would LET HIM GO.
Marco Adaggio - Willing runner, a tricky, flashy forward. Sometimes tries to do too much, but has shown he can create goals for himself when supply has been patchy: KEEP HIM
Richard Dryden - Think he has more to offer Worcester but is restricted by both budget and a squad of largely average inexperienced players and on the whole City's style of play reflects this: KEEP HIM
What I think Worcester need for next season (and probably I'm stating the obvious here) is: a brand new midfield with a high creativity quotent and maybe a tad more experience, whilst retaining the effort and tenacity that the likes of Dinsmore and Walker bring. And of course the thing that most City supporters have been crying out for for a few seasons now: a out and out goal scorer, the elusive (at least) 20 goal a season striker. Now, the standard of player that Dryden will be able to afford for next season remains open to question.
I guess if you want to turn the above into a rating for each player, it might look like this:
Danny McDonnell: B
Shabir Khan: B+
Jon Richardson: C+
Ollie Barnes: C-
Tom Kemp: B
Graham Ward: B-
Jamie Price: C
Dave Bampton: C+
Rob Davies: C+
Jordan Fitzpatrick: C+
Gary Walker: B-
Matt Dodd: C+
Matt Dinsmore: B-
Craig Wilding: C
Marco Adaggio: B
Richard Dryden: B-
