NewHighway code out and it Looks like we are going to start getting tougher on drivers who smoke behind the wheel, at long last. How anyone can consider that lighting up whilst driving can be safe is amazing.

God help us if the people who write the code get that single-cell brain of theirs into gear and realise that self righthouse non-smokers take their eyes off the road when they look for that bottle of water for a drink, or take that sweet out of the bag, again eyes off the road .... oh, I forgot, it's a witch hunt against smokers only ................. some people really need to grow up!

and they get prosecuted for it regularly, but no-one has ever been prosecuted for lighting up in a car. I'm not saying one is more dangerous than the other but they are both as dangerous. I don't t think you need to be a smoker or a non-smoker to accpet that do you?

I've never heard of a prosecution for having a drink of water or a sweet, ... now, mobile phones - that's dangerous!

In which case you havent heard much, there have been prosecutions for eating apples drinking water eating a sandwich even shaving, all driving without due care and attention. I don't see how lighting a cigarette whilst driving differs from that, do you?

So I take it you do none of these things then ? Was it electric shaving or wet?

Everyone knows my views on smoking but my Dad (an otherwise non-smoker) always smokes when he's driving for work late at night. When there's nothing else on the road at 3am it keeps him a lot more alert than not having one.

Motorway repairs all take place over night so expect jams where they bring you down to one lane. Theres enough traffic going through Warndon Villages at 3 AM to keep the police happy too. Fiddling with the radio is dangerous I found out after front ending my car at a motorway junction trying to change a cassette.

I dont take my hands off the wheel to light up whilst driving I use my feet to get a fag out the packet and strike a match. Takes a bit of contortionism in a Fiat Uno but ultimately fairly satisfying...

Sir
Last night on the way down the A17 and A47 to lil old Norfolk I had a woman behind me (aged 50 ish) who clearly wanted to read my Boston v Worcester match programme she was so close, a number of jokers driving down the centre of the road overtaking throuhg oncoming traffic (yes the lanes were wide buth they were still on the wrong side of the road), somone overtaking on a blind bend and some joker plodding along at 35 in a derestricted stretch of road.
Forget smoking , eating crisps etc use the traffic cameras to record, identify and ban these inept and dangerous fiends who think they are invulnerable. Impound and sell their vehicles to pay for more traffic officers.
Your faithfully
B Williams (Mrs)
