Does anyone know if there's been some kind of ruling this season that only one matchball can be used during a game? The reason I ask is that I was up the Villa last Saturday, and when the ball got booted into row Z, instread of another ball being thrown on from the side of the pitch, everyone waited till the original ball was thron back down onto the pitch. Same with goalkicks, the keeper always waited to retrieve the original ball!!!

I think there's a world ball shortage. Rumour has it that it started with BM3 when I hoofed a couple out of SGL before we'd even kicked off.

We probably all assumed that if you really wanted to know the answer, we would be the last bunch you'd ask.
Try: noballs.com
Actually don't.

anyone know? or have I asked the question in the wrong place!! The only ruling I know is Law 2 of the Laws of the Game which says, amongst other things, "The ball may not be changed during the match without the authority of the referee." It has become common practice over recent years for that authority to be implied so that games can be restarted quickly. This must be considered a good thing so I don't know why it didn't happen at the game you watched. Maybe Wylie McNaught had sold all the spares.

My thinking was that, if I remember rightly, there was some kerfuffle last season in games where the ball boys were being very selective as to how quickly to throw the balls back. For instance, home team one goal up in the last minute of the game, throw in to the away team, and it took an age to find a suitable ball to give to the away team to throw in. Or home team a goal down chasing the game, ball goes into touch for a throw, and like magic, a new ball appears for the home player to throw in. Its a bit like that ruling that the keeper can take a goal kick from either side of the goal, although it should speed the game up, it actually becomes a perfect opportunity for the keeper to waste time as he trots over to the furthest away point of the six yard box!! I'll see what happens this Sunday, and on MOTD Sat night.

As I recall the decision as to wether or not to continually change balls during a match is decided by both teams prior to kick off. Not heard of any changes to this.

Thanks dorothy for that info, I was unaware of that fact, but it makes sense, if both teams agree to it, then one ball is used throughout, Cheers
