Liverpool signed the 28 year old (Irish) star for £19M + uplift and failed to get (the English) Barry for £18M (or possibly a touch less). I can see the need to replace Crouchy but to pay c £10M more than you received is lunacy and Keane is not a noticeably better player than Crouch (and IMHO worse than the big fella).
Does Benitez (more like Benihill) think the fans are stupid? Or is it really just a case of having money to spend and piddling it against a wall just because you can in the vain hope that by buying enough dross you can meld a gold bar from it? Give me Richie Dryden's thoughtful approach anyday!

And they will still only finish fourth.

Strange thing is, I went to a pretty dull Liverpool preseason friendly many moons ago at Wolves and Houllier was then in charge (I think it was Hyypia's first game for the reds) and Keane came on for the last 15 minutes for wolves and he totally stole the show, he was brilliant!... I bet they would have picked him up for a song (come to think of it I think Song (Rigobert) was also playing).

It is well documented the time I spent watching Wolves, first game 1972, many hundreds since. Robbie Keane was the best player I saw play for Wolves. I was at his football league debut 09/08/1997 away at Norwich City, 2-0 win which Keane scored both goals and probably should of scored a few more that day. I'm not surprised Liverpool have signed him, as he's still rattling in goals for Spurs on a regular basis, however I'm surprised how much they've paid for him as I would think he'll be on the bench as often as he starts a game. £20 million for a squad player seems excessive to me, and as "Mark" points out in this thread "You'll still finish fourth".

4ths good enough though, it gets you into the "almost champions" league, and thats all that matters.

Once upon a time, you had to WIN the league to play in the european cup.
Those were the days!
And Brooksider, I think most Liverpool fans would say that what they REALLY want is to be Premiership champions again.

Agreed, Villa did it by winning the League, I think the Champions League should be for champions only!!!
since when did Rafa Benitez give a damn about what the fans wanted?? He wants to win the Champions League, thats all that matters, and if that means scraping in 4th place, so be it!

I was reading that the Premiership is making more money than ever - but is that largely due to shirt sales in Asia etc? Am I the only one who has lost any real interest in the whole over-hyped business? I assume others will drift away, hopefully back to real football at the lower leagues - but I suspect football in general will suffer.

Villa have reported a near 20% increase in season tickets, so I guess the Premiership gravy train rolls on

Rafa is interested in the champions league because (and i hate to say it as a Reds fan) it boosts hisown worth across the European manager transfer market. In all honesty I dont see much of a tactical revolution or an evolving XI. Its fourth. Keane a good signing but so overpriced for a guy with little pace (although he is sharp in the box and reminds me of Aldo in that way)
