Although we lost 2-0 I thought we played really well. it was only towards the end when fitness levels took over did Cheltenham start to create chances. The two new centre halves look good and we seemed to play as a team. I was also impressed by Anthony Robinson.

Played well in the first half creating several chances which Craig did not take - 4-3-3 formation. Bampton looked strong whilst Jamie Price looked the best player on show. Defensively Richardson looked OK and Wardy was excellent.
Wholesale changes at half time (whilst the visitors only brought on one sub) meant we created less chances. Edwards looked a little on the slow side as we missed the presence of Robinson and Wilding up front. The centre half from Stafford looked muscular but probably suffered from not playing with Richardson.
Cheltenham's two goals came against a side including Richard Dryden and the King.
The new winger was not involved today.

So why have a pre-season 'friendly' where the Manager and the Coach play??
I really despair at the antiquity of our so called pre-season training. What is positive about 'wholesale changes' at half time?? even though the opposing team put 1 sub on....
Every season seems to have the same choreography, 'it was only the pre-seasons.'...'Christmas is our bid for play offs'....'Easter will see us safe/playoffs'....'Hail the New Manager/Board'...........

Quite simply, so the management could have a look at several trialists. Dryden and Heeley came on towards the end so that some of those who had played the previous 75 mins could have a rest. It's early stages, they are still developing the match fitness. It was a good workout against a full-time side.

What a ridiculous statement Wakefield, RD and CH only came on towards the end when two players were struggling, what is the point of risking players picking up injuries at this time of year. This was the first match, no team plays players for the whole match in its first friendly. As for Cheltenham they had two matches that day so they split the squad, also this was not their first friendly but it was the first when they had played the whole match. The management are also looking to see as much of the trailists as possible.

Pre Season Friendlies are necessary for the management, but are incorrectly named, and incorrectly sold. They're nothing more than workouts in a slightly more match type situation. It gives the management a chance to see how people perform against ugly centrebacks, or how they distribute under pressure. It also gives them a chance to check fitness and check how well their engines are running. To sell these as games is wrong. Which is why you won't see me at one of these training sessions.

It is a proper game of football, you make it sound like they are just doing training exercises. I have enjoyed everyone I have been too, and thankfully they are cheap this year so Mr T doesnt moan about the cost!!!
We will probably go to all of them except the Stourport away one.

I was pretty impressed with what I saw. First half defense were very solid. Richardson was the least impressive but he will be invaluable as the daddy of a young team. We created half a dozen good chances and I hope it was lack of sharpness that prevented us putting a few away and not lack of scoring ability. Of the new boys I was most impressed with Bampton, he broke up much opposition play, was ferocious in the tackle and distributed neatly, giving Price the freedom to create. Second half side was a bit more of a mish-mash but they held Cheltenham and created some half decent chances until the old boys came on and we went all over the place.

What was the attendance for this game? Did the strategy of reducing the entry price in order to attract more people work or did the early k.o. time put people off?

I have enjoyed everyone I have been too, and thankfully they are cheap this year so Mr T doesnt moan about the cost!!! We will probably go to all of them except the Stourport away one. Its not a proper game, no established player is going to bust a gut or break a limb in a friendly by going in to a 40/60 and coming out badly. Also there's no limit on subs, so you can have roll on/roll off of players unlike a true game. And also there's nothing to play for in terms of points, so if you lose you don't feel the pain. If you qwin and personally have a mare, and you're a trialist, it'll hurt a lot more than if you lose but have a blinder!! I think I say this every year, but pre-season games forms part of pre-season training, it is an exercise, its a training session in an almost live situation, a bit like an army exercise with live ammo isn't actually a war. If you're on the losing side, you're hardly dead! Of course, they do serve a purpose in terms of allowing spectators to get to know what players look like, but if you don't really care what the players look like, that doesn't matter too much. Did Barry Williams play in pre-season friendlies???

325 watched, there were some Cheltenham fans there.
I think the score flattered Town as City clearly bossed the first half, our goalie, who was impressive, had very little to do first half.

"you havent got time to gossip during a real game.." Er, excuse me young Brooksider? I seem to recall we met up at a game prior to a ST meeting - and I didn't remember anything of the game! But I suppose we weren't gossiping, just discussing important matters?

Try telling that to Adam Webster!

As I said, no established player in going to bust a gut or break a limb by going into a 40/60 and coming out badly. Adam Webster wouldn't bust a gut or break a limb by going into a 40/60 in a friendly! What do you mean?

Didn't Webby break his ankle in a 'friendly' as the result of an 'unfriendly' challenge?

Did Adam Webster risk injury going into a 40/60 challenge? Injuries can occur in friendlies, and in training, but what I'm saying is that you're not going to risk injury going into a challenge you can't win in a friendly . A manager isn't going to mind players not commiting 100% in friendlies, whereas they'd rip you a new ****hole if you bottled a similar challenge in a competitive game. There's a big difference. Another difference is probably the penalty handed out for abandoning a game, and for twatting an opposing player in the cxhanging rooms too!!
