After the Cheltenham XI thingy on the other thread -
Why is 8 VIII instead of IIX which is shorter?

No idea, I do know that there are only 10 types of people in the world: Those who understand binary, and those who don't.

Here's one - if you've got a watch of clock with Roman Numerals, look at the 4 - in Roman, 4 is normally IV but on clocks and watches its usually IIII - maybe the Roman clock makers were just weird!!

And how did they text? "What's it IV" or "What's it IIII"? Perhaps that's why they ditched it? No U either so "I am here 4 U" would have to be texted as "I am here IIII V." And that would have been silly.

"and my roman numeral cock reads IIII for 4"
Is that what you use it for Mazey, telling the time?

I only asked because I was asked to write Bstander's age and:
DCCCLXXXVIII
seemed a lot more work than
CCMXXCIIX

And thats what I said, its weird but roman numerals on watches and clocks for some reason read IIII

"I'm guessing your "roman numeral cock" is too."
Or to tell the time he just lies down and thinks of something interesting. I tried it once but the shadow was too short.

Talking of cocks - sorry - clocks I bought one of them radio clocks yesterday that's linked to the atomic clock in Rugby. It was really weird watching it set itself firstly to a standby time of four o'clock then to the correct time. So at least there should be one clock in the house telling the right time.
I assume the atomic clock was put in Rugby because it's roughly the centre of England, but no doubt someone will enlighten me if not.

Thanks AC for that (very interesting) info and for providing a link. Now we know. It said on the clock's instructions to allow between 3 and 10 minutes for a signal to be received but it worked within seconds, so I assumed that was because of our proximity to Rugby, however given the clock is now in Cumbria that must be one helluva signal!
As of IV.XLIV a.m. I am now officially LXVI!
