On the face of it another 0-1 home defeat. Second from bottom of the league. Hard times for City fans. But there is a need for perspective and context and I would suggest some reason to be optimistic about the future. Looking at yesterdays game Walsall Wood are a well drilled well balanced team who looked very dangerous going forward you can see why they are top of the table. Their number 7 Jai Verma was a real threat, so fast and direct, and Ryan Glenister did a superb job in the first half keeping him shackled, as did Cam Monteith in the second half. We missed a penalty, quite obviously should have had a second penalty for an identical challenge by their goalkeeper, and this young makeshift team took the game to Walsall Wood in the second half and were unlucky not to get at least a point. We had, once again, a centre back pairing, Harry Lewis and Will Rawlings who had never previously played together. Both did very well in the circumstances. There was a new lad in midfield Harry Lewis on loan from Stourbridge who put a great shift in. This is the situation Stewart Watkins and Graham Glenister are faced with, a patched up makeshift team trying to repair the damage caused by their predecessors. So to compete so well against the top team and be applauded off at the end was a real achievement despite the result.
We also need to consider the players who we have lost and those currently injured. Craig Jones, Bailey Fuller, James Douglas, Demi Brown, Cam Debar, Josh Shuck, George Baker, all good players all currently unavailable. A terrible situation which will improve. Another reason it’s not all doom and gloom is the youngsters who are emerging. Ryan Glenister has been a revaluation. Matty Klitch and Tyreece Segree both looked good up front when they came on yesterday and will get better with more game time.
A week on Monday a new management team will be appointed. I believe the future is much brighter than it looks now, there’s no need for panic, 75 points still to play for! For my money the Club should certainly appoint Stewart and Graham who already know the players, have a foundation on which to build and are doing a really great job in desperate circumstances. I have no doubt they would get us to where we all want the Club to be.
